Thumbs up The New Sheriff in Town - Fostex 125wk Full Range

This was a lot of work and wanted to share the results with the Forum.

I was involved in a Beta test program with the Fostex 125wk; in a cabinet called a Fonken (see Fostex Pic).

The Beta testing involved 9 cabinets/builds, too small, too big; it took a few tries to get it right. The final cabinets ended up being in the middle of the pack, so on the right track all along.

Full range drivers are typicaly associated with tube amps, however these are so well tuned/wonderful I'm using a vintage 100watt Rotel (typical A/B amp) to drive them and enjoying every minute. All of a sudden my old favorite 2ways are being shrink wrapped and stored.

One of the builds was the plans-from-the-box (9 liter BR box), that was not very impressive. There is some magic going on with a Fonken.

The fellow that has been designing the Fonkens family (for many, many, years) can be contacted at:

Thanx for your help on this one Doug.

It should be noted that there are similar enclosure designs for Mark Audio & other driver, including simpiler variations (Classic Golden Ratio) and more difficulat -- the trapezoids.

No matter where you go, there you are.

I had not. Thanks for the reply. This is what I'm looking for. Please view the link to the PDF.

It states the "rated input" is 5w. Am I right to assume that a 5w tube amp has sufficient power to drive this speaker?

    Thanks much

That looks like a very good driver for your application. I did like the idea of bigger caps as mentioned on the other thread (but since you just finished I can see why you may want to wait a bit).

You may want to go the easy/small BR build, but that probably won't sound very exciting. I'd go for the folded horn box (the supplied plans); doesn't look over-the-top complicated. You might want to build the BR boxes to "break in" in the drivers, which can take 200+ hours. I did upload some pics, you can see a small BR box in one of them.

Also added a folded horn subwoofer (T-TQWT) pic, having a blast with them, crazy low (in the 30hz), powerful bass with inexpensive, $8 dollar, 6-1/2" woofers.

btw, The 125wk is only $10 more and I can speak to the sound quality, which is outstanding; maybe someone else advise about the efficiency.
